William L’s super mission to help freeze MND

It started with an ice spider.
A single spark of imagination that crawled onto the page. An idea that transformed into a story that has achieved incredible things.
In William L’s comic, Iceman, the ice spider bites a boy named Archer, giving him powers like flying and shooting ice bolts. Archer becomes Iceman. A quiet superhero who stands up when the world needs him most.

In the real world, William never imagined his creation would turn him into a quiet superhero himself. But when the final pages were finished and his story came to life, he saw an opportunity. What if his comic could help people facing something far scarier than any villain?
That’s when his mission became clear. He’d use his story to help the world.
“I stared writing Iceman in grade 2 (in 2023). I wanted to write it for fun, then asked for help publishing it,” said William. “I wanted to raise money for good things. When the comic was ready, my dad asked if I wanted to raise money for FightMND, and I said yes, because Iceman would support that.”
William first heard about motor neurone disease (MND) through the Big Freeze. The icy water, the powerful stories, the courage behind every plunge. It helped him learn more about what MND is. “Now, I know it’s a disease that paralyses your whole body, but not your brain,” he says. “I watched Emma the MP’s video (Victorian Member for Pakenham, Emma Vulin) and she is very brave.”
His comic, featuring Iceman and his enemy, the Robber, isn’t just about special powers. It’s about using your superpowers to help when bad things happen. It’s about choosing to help.
And when people started reading it and responding to it? “I felt proud,” said William. “Really proud.”
For William, supporting FightMND is about fairness and empathy. “No one deserves to be frozen for the rest of their life,” he says. “It’s important to help.”
His advice for others thinking about doing something creative for a cause?
“Don’t give up and keep fighting no matter how many people try to bring you down. It’ll be worth it.”
In every panel of Iceman, and in every dollar raised, William is showing that heroes aren’t just found in comics. They’re real and they’re all around us.
