Motor neurone disease (MND) is complex, with different forms and unknown causes. This means there’s no single answer, or simple path, to stopping it.

FightMND’s investment strategy is built on a balanced, future-focused approach. We fund groundbreaking research focused on finding treatments and, one day, a cure for MND. While the search for a cure continues, we work to invest in research and programs focused on improving the quality of life of people affected by MND today.

Innovation sits at the core of what we do. FightMND backs bold ideas, fresh approaches and strong partnerships. These efforts drive progress and enhance the lives of people affected by MND. Together, they help bring the global MND community closer to a world free from the disease.

Investing in Cure Research

Research is our only path to discovering new treatments and, one day, a cure for MND. Funding research focused on understanding and treating MND increases the chance of breakthroughs. But this takes time and funding.

FightMND’s commitment to funding focuses on four key pillars:

  1. Funding world-class research. Supporting top-tier projects through a competitive grants program aligned with NHMRC processes.
  2. Building research capacity.  Enhancing the capability of the MND research workforce through scholarships and fellowships.
  3. Investing in infrastructure. Targeting critical facilities supporting MND research in Australia.
  4. Sharing knowledge. Facilitating the exchange of insights across the national and international MND community.

This investment ensures Australian MND research is competitive and world-leading. With continued investment, we help support the discoveries shaping the future of MND treatment.

Investing in care research and programs

While the search for a cure continues, FightMND invests in research and programs supporting Australia’s MND community. These efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for people living with MND, their families and their caregivers.

Our care investment focuses on three key priorities, developed in consultation with Australia’s MND community:

  1. Generating evidence. Supporting care-focused research to guide best practices for supporting people with MND, their caregivers and families.
  2. Setting standards. Developing national standards and guidelines for MND care.
  3. Providing support. Delivering targeted support through organisations providing MND care and services.

It is important to note that FightMND is not a care service provider. This role is fulfilled by MND Australia, state MND associations, MND and Me, and other organisations serving the MND community. FightMND’s investment complements the vital work of Australia’s frontline care providers.
