Motor neurone disease (MND) changes lives. Not just medically, but emotionally, socially and financially. Everyday people are diagnosed and families are thrust into a healthcare system that can be inconsistent, fragmented and difficult to navigate.

FightMND is proud to fund the Australian MND Guideline Project, a landmark national initiative designed to improve care, reduce inequality and ensure best practice support for every Australian living with MND.

Why this Guideline matters

Right now, access to best-practice MND care varies widely depending on location and service availability. Without a national standard:

  • Care pathways can be inconsistent.
  • Families face unnecessary uncertainty and delays.
  • Health professionals lack unified, evidence-based guidance.

The Australian MND Guideline will change this by providing clear, nationally consistent recommendations that support high-quality, coordinated care, regardless of location.

A national project backed by FightMND

FightMND has committed AUD $2 million to support this two-year project delivered by Adelaide University’s Health Evidence, Synthesis, Recommendations and Impact (HESRI) Unit.

Working alongside clinicians, researchers, people living with MND and carers, Adelaide University is leading the development of Australia’s first comprehensive, evidence-based guideline for MND care.

Built on evidence. Guided by experience.

The Australian MND Guideline is being developed using internationally recognised methods to ensure recommendations are:

  • evidence based
  • clinically relevant
  • practical and implementable
  • informed by lived experience.

People living with MND and their carers are central to the project. Their input will help shape a guideline reflecting real-world needs, not just clinical theory.  organisations aim to deliver stronger, targeted, and practical solutions for the MND community.

What this means for people living with MND?

Once complete, the Guideline will:

  • Improve consistency and quality of MND care nationwide.
  • Support healthcare professionals with clear clinical guidance.
  • Help families better under understand and navigate care pathways.
  • Reduce disparities in access to services and support.

This is about delivering faster, fairer and more coordinated care for Australians living with MND today.
