We are fighting to beat ‘The Beast’

Our vision is a world without Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and it takes people to help achieve this.

Our core aims are to generate greater awareness of the disease, to fund world-class research and drug trials to find an effective treatment and ultimately a cure for MND and provide assistive care equipment to many Australians fighting the disease.

There is no known cause, limited knowledge of the natural course of the disease, there is no effective treatment and there is no cure.

We call it ‘The Beast’. This is why we fight.

Professor Aaron Russell from the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University was recently awarded a FightMND IMPACT Grant.

Our Impact in MND Research: SALSA-SGC

Hear from Dr Susan Mathers (Calvary Healthcare Bethlehem), Professor Naomi Wray (Institute for Molecular Bioscience, UQ), and Stephen Robertshaw (participant living with MND) about the Sporadic ALS Australian Systems Genomics Consortium (SALSA-SGC), and the impact it is making in the development of effective treatments for MND.

FightMND IMPACT Grant | Associate Professor Allan McRae

Associate Professor Allan McRae from the Institute for Molecular Bioscience was recently awarded a FightMND IMPACT Grant, jointly funded by MND and Me. This grant was awarded in honour of Murray Geale, a selfless advocate for MND research. Allan’s project is exploring protein biomarkers to provide an avenue for rapid diagnosis of MND, and to monitor its progression.

FightMND’s mid-career research fellow, Associate Professor Shyuan Ngo discusses how a phase 1 clinical trial (METFLEX) which will test the drug Trimetazidine in 36 patients across sites in Brisbane, London and Utrecht was made possible due to funding from FightMND and the Australian Federal Government.
